Ashley Williams told Football Focus on BBC One that Gareth Bale’s situation at Tottenham has been ‘frustrating’ for him as his friend.
The recently retired defender took the field on a number of occasions with Bale for Wales, as he backed the left-footed speedster to get back to his best.
During Tottenham’s most recent defeat against Chelsea, Bale was an unused substitute after starting last week’s encounter against Brighton.
Even though the signs suggest that Spurs won’t see the magic from Bale again, his former international teammate has backed him to prove many people wrong.
“I do think he can,” said Williams. “It’s been frustrating, as a friend and a fan of him. I was absolutely buzzing to see him come to the Premier League to watch him week in and week out. We haven’t been able to do that.
“Maybe, it’s a bit of time adjusting to a new team. One that was settled with a lot of firepower going forward.
“Where does he play now? He’s the other side of 30. Does he need to change his game a little bit? Not too sure.
“But for all of us, we would like to see the Gaz from a few years ago. I know I definitely would. I want it to work out for him. If they get him firing, it would be a big help for them.”
Frustration seems to be the keyword when it comes to Bale at Tottenham because it’s not the return the fans would have wanted.
Daniel Levy isn’t known to splash the cash in a crazy manner, and whilst a transfer fee wasn’t paid for Bale’s services, he is on big wages.
But it’s heading towards a pretty obvious end, at this moment in time, and that’s Bale going back to Real Madrid to play Golf.
