Kobbie Mainoo has found this season to be the most frustrating of his young career at Manchester United.

Now approaching the one-third mark of the Premier League season, Mainoo has yet to make a start in the league.

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that Mainoo deserves playing time but also said he cannot justify dropping anyone for the 20-year-old at this point.

Mainoo’s frustration is growing, as his minutes have mostly come when games are already decided, which has not happened often.

However, United in Focus understands that there could soon be a solution on the horizon.

Mainoo had wanted a loan move away from United during the summer window, but the club blocked it, telling him he was part of their plans. That promise has not materialised.

Now, United in Focus understands that the 20-year-old’s best route out of Old Trafford may come through a swap involving one of Ineos’ transfer targets.

Mainoo’s representatives have pushed again for a January loan, frustrated by his limited minutes and stalled contract talks.

United in Focus has also learned that intermediaries have told the club there is concrete interest from Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion.

This could play into United’s pursuit of Adam Wharton, Elliott Anderson or Carlos Baleba – all high up on their 2026 wishlist.

Atletico Madrid are another side open to taking Mainoo. That could be useful if United decide to make another push for Conor Gallagher.

For now, though, the club are holding firm. They have so far rejected his requests for a move.

Should Mainoo’s status remain unchanged as January approaches, a mutual agreement for him to secure regular playing time elsewhere seems inevitable.
