Ibrox manager Pedro Caixinha appears to have stoked the fire with Aberdeen ahead of their meeting with Rangers.
James Forrest of Celtic is fouled by Anthony O’Connor of Aberdeen
Aberdeen ace Anthony O’Connor has told The Scotsman that he is sick of hearing about Rangers – and isn’t bothered about Pedro Caixinha’s comments about second place in the Scottish Premiership.
Caixinha became Rangers boss last month following Mark Warburton’s departure in February, and he has so far won once and drawn twice from his three games in charge, having drawn 0-0 at Kilmarnock on Wednesday evening.
The Gers now lie 12 points behind second-placed Aberdeen with just seven games to go, meaning Rangers are looking likely to finish in third place at this point.
Rangers travel to Pittodrie on Sunday afternoon to take on Aberdeen, and defeat in that game would kill off any lingering hopes of Rangers claiming second place behind Celtic.
That’s particularly important given that new Rangers boss Caixinha, as quoted by Sky Sports, claimed that finishing in second place was his top priority upon becoming manager, and he was confident that Rangers would pip Aberdeen.
Now, the Gers are drinking in the last chance saloon in their pursuit of second place, and one Aberdeen player says he is fed up of hearing about Rangers.
New Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha
Dons ace Anthony O’Connor has told The Scotsman that he thinks Aberdeen should be talked about more, rather than the focus constantly being on Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers.
O’Connor also admitted that isn’t bothered about Caixinha’s comments regarding second place as Aberdeen will do their talking on the pitch, and will show how good they are with a win this weekend.
“Him saying stuff like that doesn’t bother us too much because we just go on to the pitch and do our business,” said O’Connor. “It galvanises us to win more when people are talking about us. People are talking about Rangers, they are there every time I watch the news. We are the ones who are in second and people should be talking about us a bit more.”
“At the start of the season and before a ball was kicked, all the talk was about Rangers coming back into the league. It was all about Celtic and Rangers and we were just going to be the team who finished third or fourth but we have shown how good we have been all season. We want people to be looking at our results every weekend and saying they have won again and they are not letting up at all. Rangers are a good team, they are a massive club and it is going to be tough but we are going to show how good we are and to take away three points,” he added.
