Tottenham Hotspur have been tipped to step up their pursuit of reported Arsenal target James Maddison after Newcastle United failed with an offer on Saturday.
According to 90 Min, Newcastle had a £40 million offer knocked back yesterday.
The same report added that both Tottenham and Arsenal are interested in signing the Leicester City playmaker this summer.
According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, the Foxes will want around £60 million for the England international.
Spurs have been linked a lot more than their North London rivals in recent weeks.
And journalist Dean Jones believes that Newcastle’s failed attempt might act as the catalyst for Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici to get serious, adding that the player isn’t interested in a transfer to St James’s Park.
He told Give Me Sport: “Spurs will be watching this situation and it might spark them into a bid. I don’t think Maddison is convinced about Newcastle from what I’ve heard.”
Tottenham are a much more credible threat to the Magpies than Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta already has Martin Odegaard and Fabio Vieira in North London to name a few and frankly, Spurs don’t have the same in-field creativity.
Much of the Lilywhites’ creativity will be coming out on the flanks next season, with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski expected to create for Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.
But they’ve been desperately needing a proper number 10 since Christian Eriksen left in 2020 and maybe, just maybe, Maddison could be that guy.
