Alasdair Gold has told his YouTube channel that Christian Eriksen wants to remain in London this summer – and that Tottenham have held talks at board level about re-signing the Dane. He is available on a free transfer.

Eriksen, 29, has returned to football after suffering a heart attack last summer at Euro 2020. He has rejoined Brentford, reuniting with Thomas Frank having worked with the Bees boss during his youth Denmark days.

It has been an inspired move. Eriksen has starred for Brentford, having a hand in three goals during his seven appearances – and scored twice for Denmark in the most-recent international break. His future is a doubt.

He only signed a six-month deal with Brentford. Fabrizio Romano recently said he will sit down with the Bees at the end of the season out of loyalty to discuss his future. Gold says Tottenham are keen, and gave an update.

“He would fit in there like a glove, in [Antonio] Conte’s 3-5-2, as he did with Inter Milan. I know Spurs have spoken, have had discussions about bringing him in as a free agent – as in amongst themselves.

“I think there’s going to be a queue of competition for him. I don’t think he left Spurs on the best of terms with the hierarchy. But, he does love the club. He wants to stay in London, from what I understand, with his family.”

Gold on Eriksen: Tottenham move for Danish playmaker the right one?

Conte has implemented a 3-4-3 system at Spurs, boasting Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park. They do not include a no.10, and their wingers are on fire – Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski.

So, while Gold claims he would fit like a glove, he certainly would not in the current system. Conte, if he remains, would have to change his system to the one that won him the Serie A title with Eriksen at Inter Milan.

A 3-5-2 – or more so, a 3-4-1-2 system. It saw Eriksen or an attacking midfielder play behind Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez. Eriksen could play behind Harry Kane and Son, albeit harsh on Kulusevski.
