Speaking on The Done Deal Show, Dean Jones has been discussing James Maddison’s future after Newcastle United bid for the midfielder last week.
The Magpies have made a rather ambitious approach for Maddison, but unfortunately for the Tyneside club, this transfer is rather unlikely.
Indeed, according to Jones, the England international harbours no ambition of playing for Newcastle, with the reporter stating that the former Norwich City man would rather join Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal.
What’s been said?
Jones spoke about Maddison’s situation and his ambitions.
“James Maddison has had an approach from Newcastle. The offer Newcastle have put to Leicester isn’t enough and they have to decide whether or not to bid again. They’ve not been encouraged to bid again and I don’t get any signs that Maddison actually wants to join Newcastle, from what I hear Maddison wants to join Tottenham or Arsenal. If he’s going to leave Leicester one of those two need to make an offer, that’s the latest I’ve heard,” Jones said.

Money talks
Maddison may prefer to join Arsenal or Spurs at the moment because of their relative standing within English football right now, but, as ever, money talks in this game.
If Newcastle offer him a long-term contract on big money, the reality is that he’s unlikely to turn it down.
Think about it, in the late 2000s Manchester City were attracting the likes of Robinho and Carlos Tevez with huge pay-packets, and while they easily could have stayed at the likes of Real Madrid or Manchester United, the money was simply too good to turn down.
To quote The Godfather, Newcastle may need to make Maddison an offer he can’t refuse.
