Speaking on NUFC Matters, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Newcastle United’s League Cup run and how the competition is viewed within the club.
Newcastle, as many know, haven’t won any kind of silverware for generations, but after making it through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup this week, glory seems to be not too far out of reach for the Magpies.
Of course, many teams don’t consider the League Cup to be a competition of utmost importance due to the Premier League, FA Cup and European competitions taking centre stage, but according to Jacobs, people within Newcastle are really putting the League Cup high on their list of priorities.
Newcastle prioritising League Cup
Jacobs shared what he knows about the Magpies’ view of this competition.
“There’s a fair chance that Newcastle will get a kind draw. Newcastle will be happy enough with any draw. That’s the difference, Newcastle will take anyone at home now and feel they can beat anyone. Winning a trophy is seen as vital, whether that’s the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup, there’s no pecking order at the moment,” Jacobs said.
“I get a sense, certainly from the PIF side of the ownership group, speaking to people connected to the club that the League Cup is high priority and why shouldn’t it be?”
A trophy is a trophy
Newcastle are absolutely right to be prioritising the League Cup. After all, this sport is about winning trophies, and this is a great chance to do just that.
Yes, it’s not the most glamourous competition in the world, but that winning feeling will surely push this squad on to go and achieve more than they already have.
There are plenty of Newcastle fans out there who will never have seen their team win a trophy, but this is a chance to change that and make some history.
