Tyler Morton has been speaking to Sport Bible about his start to life in the Liverpool first-team, and he found time to shower Jürgen Klopp in praise.
What’s the story?
Well, it seems the 19-year-old Liverpool prodigy is a big fan of the German.
This season, Klopp has handed Morton his Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup debut, to reward him for his efforts in the Under-23 setup.
Of course, a teenager making his Champions League debut is bound to be nervous, but Morton wasn’t – thanks to something Klopp said before kick-off.
The Wallasey-born wonderkid said: “He told me that if anything goes wrong today then it’s not on my back, it’s on his. He basically wanted me to know that he is experienced enough to not just throw me in at the deep end. He wanted me to know that I am good enough.
“Those words help you become a better player. I didn’t feel nervous from that moment on and that was because of our chat. It made me open up and play forward with my first few touches. I was away after that.”
As well as a world class tactician, Klopp also deals with the psychological side of football incredibly well, as Morton’s comments reinforce.
As he once famously said, his Liverpool side are “mentality monsters” – that doesn’t just happen. It stems down from the German’s influence.
Liverpool have another gem in Tyler Morton
After Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones emerged from the Academy, Liverpool seem to have another prodigy in Morton.
After training with the first-team, even Thiago – a man who rose through La Masia at Barcelona, and has also played for Bayern Munich – asked who Morton was.
Once he begins to bulk up a bit, the Reds will have a very, very good player on their hands, one who is already outstanding from a technical perspective.
With a manager like Klopp, and teammates like Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson, the sky is the limit for Morton at Anfield.
Whatever Liverpool are feeding their kids in the Academy, they need more of it – the Reds just keep churning out wonderkids.
