Harry Kewell has told the Premier League’s coverage of Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool that it is “frightening” to see Leeds United’s current position. He is concerned for Leeds and Everton, after Burnley’s two successive wins.
A 3-0 win over Watford last time out looked as if it pushed the Whites away from the relegation zone – but Everton have beaten Manchester United and drew with Leicester. They lost on Sunday to Liverpool, the score 2-0.
Burnley, meanwhile, have sacked Sean Dyche and despite a decision seen as strange – it has worked, picking up wins over Southampton and Wolves. It sees Burnley leapfrog Everton into 17th. Everton have a game in hand.
Ex-Leeds man Kewell was asked about the possibility of Leeds staying up as they continue to fight with Everton and Burnley – and he is worried for his old club. He would rather be in Burnley’s position, than Everton or Leeds.
“It’s frightening to see. It’s disappointing, because they are a fantastic club. They’ve worked so hard to get where they are. Looking at the run in, I’d be happy to be in Burnley’s situation – new manager, a couple of wins.
“The momentum is there, with Everton and Leeds, they have a tough run-in. If Leeds can scrape through and win, it removes the pressure. I’d like to see them win, because the next three games are going to be very difficult.”
Kewell on Leeds, Everton: Who goes down come the end of the season?
Everton look in serious trouble. Yes, they beat Manchester United and secured a late point against Leicester. But they next face Chelsea, and still face Arsenal, Leicester and an in-form Brentford – as well as Watford.
Leeds also have a very tough run in. They face Palace, and then three incredibly tough games against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. Brighton and Brentford finish their season off – but Leeds are on 33.
Four above Everton, and two above Burnley who have played one more ahead of tonight. But of all three, you would rather be Burnley – given their run in: Watford, Villa, Tottenham, Villa, Newcastle.
