Eric Dier has revealed that he still speaks to his old Tottenham teammates Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele “pretty much every day”.
What’s the story?
Well, the England international clearly struck up a close friendship with the Belgian duo in N17, as they remain in daily contact – despite the fact they’ve been apart for a while now.
Speaking to The Athletic, the £4m Tottenham man said: “People come and go. And in one way, with Jan and Mousa, I’d say they’re still my closest friends in football. I speak to Jan pretty much every day.”
As you may know, Vertonghen left Spurs to join Benfica in 2020, after making an incredible 315 appearances for Tottenham.
In Dembele’s case, he was sold to Guangzhou City by Mauricio Pochettino in January 2019, after registering 249 appearances for the north Londoners.
Dier, of course, is still at Tottenham, where he is shining under Antonio Conte.
Despite going their separate ways, it is pleasing to hear that the 28-year-old remains in contact with his old teammates.
Eric Dier set to have a big season for Tottenham
In our view, Dier could easily be one of Tottenham’s standout players in the 2022/23 campaign.
The Tottenham No.15 ended last season in tremendous form, with Gary Lineker even suggesting that it was harsh from Gareth Southgate to leave him out of the England squad.
Speaking of the England squad, there is also a World Cup place to play for ahead of the tournament in November.
Graeme Souness also believes that Dier has been transformed under Conte’s guidance.
The Sky Sports pundit said: “He made people like Dier all of a sudden look like he should be back in the England team. Doherty and Davies (too).”
Alongside the imperious Cristian Romero, and the new boy Clement Lenglet, there is no reason why Dier cannot have his best season yet at Tottenham.
