Laurent Robert has told Sky Sports that he cried when he left Newcastle United and now wants to come back to St. James’ Park to watch a game.

Robert became a very popular figure on Tyneside during his time with Newcastle, when he spent five years with them between 2001 and 2006.

Robert eventually left Newcastle to join Benfica, but his career never really took off after his departure from Tyneside.

And Robert is now hoping that he gets the chance to go back to St. James’ Park and watch his son, Thomas, play there.

“My wife and I cried when we left,” Robert admitted.

“I still speak with fans on Instagram and I want to see Newcastle back at the top and to even win the Champions League – why not? I want to come back to see one game there – maybe when Thomas is playing there.”

The Chronicle actually claim that Newcastle have an interest in signing Thomas Robert from Marseille.

The youngster’s contract is set to expire in the near future, and he has gone on record to suggest he wants a Premier League move.

If Robert was to move to Newcastle he would hope to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Laurent made 181 appearances for Newcastle during his time with the club, scoring on 32 goals during that time.
