France lost the World Cup final on Sunday, and, as you can imagine, the French press are in meltdown after their team failed to retain their 2018 title.

As many know, the French media can be brutal at the best of times, and after this final defeat, they didn’t hold back when reviewing some of their players’ performances.

Sadly, Hugo Lloris was one of the scapegoats after he failed to save any of Argentina’s penalties – diving the wrong way for a number of the South American’s spot kicks.

Lloris received stick when his own performance was being reviewed, but he also received a sly dig in SoFoot’s review of Axel Disasi’s performance

Lloris receives stick

The French press weren’t too kind about Lloris.

“At least he didn’t crash in the final this time around. Well, he did not stop penalties either, but that we knew,” SoFoot wrote

The French outlet then had another dig at Lloris when evaluating Axel Disasi who was substituted on only to not have a touch of the ball.

“Replaced by Disasi ( 120th +1), who touched as many balls as Lloris on penalties,” They wrote.

Had to do better

It may be harsh to pile in on Lloris after probably the most heart-breaking moment in his career to date, but he had to do better on these penalties.

Let’s be honest, more than one of these spot kicks were saveable.

Lionel Messi’s effort was incredibly tame, while Paulo Dybala didn’t strike his effort with much conviction either.

It’s not that Lloris didn’t save the penalties, it’s that he wasn’t close to any of them.

Compare that to Emi Martinez who managed to get his hand to Kylian Mbappe’s thunderous spot kick and you can see why the French press are annoyed.

Lloris does need to improve when it comes to saving penalties, that’s for sure.
