A team of free agents who could still be signed, including players released by Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Liverpool this summer.

Deadline day is over and the transfer window has slammed shut, yet players without a club can still make a move.

Free agents, who have spent the summer looking for a new destination without success, remain an option for clubs throughout the season.

Though mostly veterans of the game, there is plenty of class and decoration still on show in this side of players itching for a fresh challenge.

Mark Schwarzer — At 43, the Australian’s time to hang up his boots may be in the offing, but Schwarzer has proved that he is more than capable of still producing when called upon. Released by champions Leicester City in July, yet another cameo in the Premier League this year would make him the league’s oldest ever player.

Martin Caceres — Providing he can make a full recovery from an Achilles injury which abruptly ended his fourth year at Juventus, the Uruguayan could prove a very useful and experienced addition to a top flight side.

Alex — Released by AC Milan in July, the Brazilian defender, now 34, has won titles with PSV, PSG and Chelsea. Nicknamed “The Tank” due to his physical strength and the power of his shot, Alex could still have a couple of good years left in him.

Kieran Richardson — Part of Aston Villa’s sudden collapse last season, the 31-year-old could be useful to a club in need. His experience and versatility may spark a call or two from clubs looking for those valuable assets.

Jose Enrique — The Spaniard was released by Liverpool before last season had even ended. Having spent the last five seasons at Liverpool and four with Newcastle before that, he is well equipped to playing in the Premier League. At 30, he should still have a few good years left in him too.

Kevin Constant — The Guinean has been linked to plenty of clubs in England’s top tier in the past and at 29, still has plenty playing time left. Constant can provide cover at the back and in midfield and would cost nothing following his release from Bologna in Serie A.

Mathieu Flamini — The 32-year-old managed an impressive 24 appearances in his final season at Arsenal and his proven ability will mean the midfielder isn’t without a club for long. A move back to Italy seems most likely, though.

Stephane Sessegnon — The Benin international left West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season after arriving for a club-record fee from Sunderland. The slick and skilful playmaker is still capable of holding his own against Premier League defenders. It’s surprising to see Sessegnon without a club at the end of the window.

Emmanuel Adebayor — The 32-year-old is still up for grabs after Crystal Palace opted not to extend his contract. The Togo striker only managed to notch one goal in nine appearances during his stint at Selhurst Park, though the much travelled Adebayor has a goalscoring record which stands up to most.

Dimitar Berbatov — After scoring just 17 goals in the past three seasons at Monaco and Greek side PAOK, the former Manchester United striker’s career looks to be nearing its conclusion. He has 94 Premier League strikes to his name, it’s highly doubtful that we will see that number rise, though you never know.

Nicklas Bendtner — At 28, time is on the Dane’s side, so it will be intriguing to see where he chooses to end up. Bendtner became a free agent after Wolfsburg cancelled his contract with immediate effect due to poor discipline. That won’t go down well trying to find a new club.
