Newcastle are expected to be active in January, if Rafa Benitez is to be believed.

Rafa Benitez confirmed earlier this week that Newcastle United will be looking to make two additions in the January transfer window – and a recently-turned free agent may be the perfect signing.
The Chronicle reckon Benitez wants at least two new faces at St. James’ Park in the January window, though he is unlikely he will make any promises after being frustrated once again by owner Mike Ashley in the summer.
But one transfer may please Ashley, as well as delivering a whole new enthusiasm and excitement among the St. James’ Park faithful by luring a Barcelona and Spain legend to Tyneside.
Indeed, David Villa has become a free agent after deciding not to renew his contract with MLS side New York City FC – where he played alongside the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard under Patrick Vieira.
Turning 37 next month, Villa has shown once again this season he is still more than capable of finding the back of the net at a decent level – scoring 15 goals in 27 games for New York City.
In 126 appearances in all competitions, the 98-time Spain international scored 80 goals after completing the surprise move to the States from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014.

Now a free agent after the MLS season finished, Villa is likely to be on the lookout for a new club and Newcastle should offer him a contract until the end of the season to give themselves the fire power to avoid relegation.
The Toon are struggling up front for goals, with Salomon Rondon top scoring on three strikes. A new striker – or another source of goals – is required.
A move for Villa is beneficial in many ways. Ashley will surely sanction a deal, as he is available for nothing. Signing a player with the calibre of Villa will excite fans, renewing the potential enthusiasm at the club.
His experience and winning mentality would be crucial to The Toon. The 2010 World Cup winner must be considered by Newcastle in January.
