Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and Neil Lennon’s Celtic reportedly wanted to sign Renato Tapia in the January transfer window, but no move materialised.
As reported by Voetbal International, Rangers and Celtic were interested in the 24-year-old, but the versatile player decided to stay at Feyenoord.
The Peru international, who can operate as a central defender or as a midfielder, is leaving Feyenoord this summer, as his current contract is set to finish, as reported by Algemeen Dagblad and covered by HITC here.
According to Todofichajes, the former FC Twente man has decided to join Celta de Vigo in Spain, despite having interest from Alaves and clubs in Mexico.
Rangers and Celtic missing out
Rangers and Celtic would have been wise to at least make a move for Tapia this summer, especially as the Gers and the Hoops reportedly wanted him in January.
Nothing much has really changed since then, especially as football in Scotland was suspended in March due to the global health crisis.
With Rangers interested in Pedro Chirivella of Liverpool, as reported by Goal.com, and The Scottish Sun claiming that the Gers want Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson in the summer transfer window, it is clear that manager Gerrard is looking for a new midfielder.
With Jozo Simunovic leaving Celtic, manager Lennon will need cover at centre-back.
The versatility and strength of the Peru international would have seen him make the Celtic squad better and given Lennon more options in the middle of the park as well.
As for Rangers, Gerrard could have done with a midfielder who is only 24 and available on a free transfer in his attempt to stop Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title 10 times in a row.
