This free agent could be ideal short-term solution for Sheffield Wednesday in Sam Hutchinson’s absence

The 31-year-old left Leeds United by mutual consent at the start of the month and has been training with Derby County.

Sheffield Wednesday could find themselves short at centre-back if Sam Hutchinson is ruled out for a prolonged period.

The versatile ex-Chelsea man has been restored to his natural home at the heart of defence, having often been deployed in central midfield since his arrival at Hillsborough around 30 months ago.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, for a player once dubbed John Terry’s heir, it has been so far so good for Hutchinson, who when available has kept captain Glenn Loovens out of the Owls’ side.

That said, the 26-year-old’s fitness and suspension records are equally sketchy and, after hobbling out of Tuesday’s win at Blackburn with an apparent back injury, Wednesday fans are perhaps best advised not to expect an immediate return to action.

Should Hutchinson face a spell on the sidelines, Owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal would be left with just three natural centre-halves, which by my maths works out at fewer than his required ‘two players for each position’.

With the emergency loan window abolished this season, the Portuguese would be left with two options; either promote from within, or look for free agents.

Given he chose the latter when seeking left-back cover earlier this month, my money is on that one -and there is one obvious candidate.

Recently released by Leeds United, Sol Bamba has been training with Derby County, whose manager Nigel Pearson previously worked with him at Leicester City.

However, Pearson’s recent suspension may have scuppered the 31-year-old’s chances of finding immediate employment, and the timing could not be better for Wednesday should they need to recruit someone short-term.

A former Leeds captain, with 49 international caps and more twice as many Championship appearances to his name, Bamba would add leadership and experience to the Owls’ back line, not to mention plenty of athleticism.

While he may not be everyone’s cup of tea, if anyone can spot a half-decent centre-half, surely it is our Nige?
