Frederik Ronnow learning the hard way after Nottingham Forest snub

Nottingham Forest were unable to lure Ronnow to the City Ground in August – and that appears to have done his reputation no favours.

Nottingham Forest were convinced that Frederik Ronnow was the answer to their goalkeeping problems as the days ticked by in the latter stages of the summer transfer window.

According to the Nottingham Post, Forest launched three bids for the shot-stopper, the final one reaching around £2.4 million, but failed to meet the price-tag put on Ronnow’s head by Danish club Brondby.

And the report adds that Ronnow himself had grown cold about the idea of playing in England’s second tier – despite admitting that he needed to move to a bigger league to challenge Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel for the Denmark number one jersey.

“Kasper has done well at the club and national team, but I’m not satisfied with Kasper being number one,” said the five-cap Ronnow in June, via Sport.TV. “But I am also realistic. I know it requires me to take some steps in my career before I’m there.

“I want to be as good as I can be, and so I have to push myself too. I’m at a level now that makes me ready to go to another league. Kasper has some experience from major leagues and internationally, which I lack, but I believe that I will get in the coming years.”

Opportunity missed

Forest, unlike Leicester, are not a Premier League team. Yet, according to City A.M back in 2015, the English Championship is the fourth most watched league in Europe with Sky Sports now broadcasting regular weekend fixtures.

There’s little doubt that a move to one of the biggest clubs in England’s second tier would have given Ronnow more time in the limelight than remaining in his native Denmark.

And considering that he was left on the bench for both of his nation’s World Cup qualifiers recently, perhaps the 25-year-old is learning the hard way that he missed a very good opportunity.
