Caen defender Frederic Guilbert has told Actu in France that he is ashamed by the club’s position – but is desperate to leave them in Ligue 1.
Guilbert, 24, has been impressing in Frane at right back, and that prompted interest from Aston Villa during the January transfer window.
On deadline day last month, Villa secured a deal for Guilbert, but agreed to loan him back to Caen in order to aid their battle against relegation.
Caen sit second bottom of the Ligue 1 table, two points adrift of safety after Sunday’s 0-0 draw at home to Strasbourg.
They need to start picking up points quickly, and Guilbert will be a key part of that before he heads off to join up with his Villa teammates this summer.
Now, Guilbert has admitted that he and his teammates are ‘ashamed’ that Caen are battling relegation again, with the defender admitting it’s ‘hard’ to be in such a sorry state.
The Frenchman added that he arrived at Caen in Ligue 1 and wants them to be playing in the top flight after he’s gone, issuing a rallying cry to everyone in order to save the club – and Villa fans may be impressed with his leadership qualities.
“I hope everyone realises that we are in a very difficult time and we will need everyone. We are a little ashamed of ourselves,” said Guilbert. “I have only one idea in mind, and that’s to leave the club in Ligue 1. I arrived in Ligue 1, I want them to start again in Ligue 1. It’s the club of my region, I was formed here.”
“It’s been three years now that I live this. It’s hard. I think we are in a slightly more complex situation than in previous years. We will have to fight, for our honour, for our pride, for the name we have on our backs. We will have to raise our heads and save this institution,” he added.
