Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has delivered his verdict on the Magpies’ rumoured pursuit of Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for nothing following the Mackems’ relegation from the Premier League, and is not expected to remain at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle, who will replace their fierce rivals in next season’s top flight, are one of several clubs linked with a move for the 34-year-old, after he scored 15 goals in 35 league games this campaign.

However, Defoe’s form is not enough to make Shepherd overlook his Sunderland ties. When asked whether Newcastle should favour younger or older players – specifically the England international – in this summer’s transfer market, he told Talksport: “Well it [Defoe’s transfer] wouldn’t be for me, but they definitely need to bring some older players in put it that way, who can sort of see themselves through the Premier League season.

“These younger players are great but when you’re in the Premier League you need proper seasoned players who can handle it.”

The last player to move directly from Sunderland to Newcastle was Jack Colback, although the midfielder is a lifelong fan of the Magpies.

And while DeAndre Yedlin was on the Mackems’ books prior to his move to St James’ Park last summer, the full-back was on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the time.
