Former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg has told the Daily Star what type of manager the Gunners should appoint as Arsene Wenger’s successor.

The Frenchman celebrated 20 years in charge at the club this week, making him the Premier League’s second longest-serving manager behind Sir Alex Ferguson.

He is into the final year of his contract at the Emirates and all indications have been that he will bring his long reign to an end.

Speculation is rife about who could replace him at the club, with a host of big names likely to be linked with the job should he depart.

Rather than naming an ideal candidate, though, Ljungberg has identified the type of manager the Gunners must appoint.

“Arsene has been brilliant and I think it should be totally up to him when he chooses to leave,” he told the Daily Star.

“But when it happens I would like a manager who believes in an attacking and passing game. That’s extremely important. There’s a lot of great coaches out there but nobody can replace Arsene.”

It will certainly be interesting to see which manager Arsenal target as Wenger’s successor when he does depart.

This summer saw an influx of big name managers into the Premier League and the Gunners may feel that they need to follow that trend with their own big capture.

Diego Simeone would be the likely candidate, although whether the Arsenal hierarchy would be willing to spend the money needed to tempt him away from Atletico Madrid is debatable.

Whether Simeone fits Ljungberg’s description of an ‘attacking coach’ is also questionable, but there’s no doubt the Argentine would be a name which gets supporters excited.
