Fraser Forster has suggested that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is good enough to be considered a £60 million player as he offers something that very few centre-backs bring to the table, the Evening Times reports.
Van Dijk is arguably one of the hottest properties in the top flight currently, having followed up his excellent spell with Celtic by proving to be a talisman-like figure for the Saints.
Unfortunately for the Southampton fans who have had to watch their club sell many of their better players in recent years, the Dutchman’s form has not gone unnoticed.
The Mirror recently reported that the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool were all keen on van Dijk with figures of £60 million being discussed as a potential fee.
And Forster is adamant that van Dijk is a player who could command such a fee based on how he has adapted to life in the Premier League.
“Am I surprised Virgil’s been spoken about as a £60m player? No. Not when you have played with him. I saw him early at Celtic and he just cruised through games,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.
“Everything was effortless and then he came down to England, and he’s been fantastic. It’s a real credit to him. He’s shown everyone that he’s one of – if not the – best defender in the Premier League. He’s great on the ball and it’s hard to find players like him at centre half.”
Forster will be desperately hoping that none of the interested clubs are prepared to make such a bid however, as keeping van Dijk will perhaps be crucial to the club’s hopes of progressing.
