Scott Arfield scored two goals for Rangers as Steven Gerrard’s side obliterated Motherwell by seven goals to one, and former Gers man Fraser Aird applauded the midfielder for his post-match comments.

Arfield, 30, scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season for Rangers in his 21st appearance for the club since joining on a free from English Premier League side Burnley in the summer.

Eros Grezda also scored twice, while Glenn Middleton, Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier got their names on the score sheet, the latter continuing his 100 per cent ratio from the spot this season with eight out of eight.

Arfield told Rangers’ official website after the match that he became a father for the second time this week and he dedicated his two goals to his two daughters, the latest being born on Tuesday.

“I was a father again with my wee girl on Tuesday morning so I missed training. I had my wee girl, Betsy, early doors on Tuesday,” Arfield said. “I’ve got another wee lassie as well so those two goals were for my two wee girls.”

The win came at the perfect time for Gerrard’s men, after Celtic failed to beat newly-promoted Livingston at Almondvale on Sunday – drawing 0-0. It leaves the Gers just two points behind Brendan Rodgers’ leaders, as well as Hearts.

Aird, 23, who played for Rangers 85 times during five seasons at Ibrox before leaving the club last summer, responded to Arfield’s comments on Twitter with a three-word verdict: “What a guy”.

Rangers return after the international break to play host to Gary Holt’s Livingston on November 24, before facing Spanish side Villarreal in the Europa League five days later.
