James Forrest is one of Celtic’s best players.

James Forrest of Celtic celebrates his goal with Callum McGregor during the Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park on November 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Frank McAvennie has told Open Goal that he believes James Forrest’s lack of defensive quality is the reason why no Premier League club has taken a chance on him.

The 28-year-old has arguably been the Hoops’ most consistent performer in recent seasons and won Player of the Year last term after helping Neil Lennon’s side to a third successive treble.

Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers’s Leicester City have both been linked this calendar year, while The Scottish Sun claimed earlier this month that Zenit St Petersburg were keen on the £12 million-rated star.

And although McAvennie acknowledges that he’s a ‘great fit’ for Celtic, the Parkhead legend suggests that he might not be able to cut it in the Premier League.

Asked why no English club has come in for him, McAvennie told Open Goal: “It might be because he’s not great at defending. He’s not great at getting back. I think he’s happy [at Celtic]. He’s a great fit. I don’t know if he could go down there and do it. I think the Premier League’s a bit [too strong].”

Celtic fans won’t care if Forrest can cut it in England or not.

The longer he’s in Glasgow, the better it is from their perspective. He’s a massive player for the Bhoys and one who could be huge in helping the club to an unprecedented 10-in-a-row in 2021.

So far, Celtic have won eight Premiership titles on the bounce, and losing someone of Forrest’s qualities would be a big, big blow.

He has six goals in all competitions this season, ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Rangers.
