Celtic icon McAvennie believes Lafferty will be a top addition for Rangers.
Celtic icon Frank McAvennie has told Open Goal’s Right In The Coupon that Kyle Lafferty will be an excellent signing for Steven Gerrard’s side, and reckons he will start against Celtic on September 2.
Rangers completed the signing of 30-year-old Lafferty on Wednesday afternoon and he was thrown straight into the Gers side to face Russian Premier League outfit FC Ufa on Thursday night.
The 67-time Northern Ireland international came off the bench in the 69th minute, replacing Daniel Candeias and he looked lively during his first outing back at Rangers in his second spell.
McAvennie reckons the versatile star will be a top addition for Rangers and Gerrard, and believes he could start against Celtic in just over a week’s time at Parkhead.
“I think he’ll go out on the left wing, I think he brings something to the club that they did not have,” McAvennie said “As Gerrard said, he ticks all the boxes for them. Nothing will faze him. I think he will fling him straight into the Old Firm.
“It won’t bother Lafferty. That’s what good strikers are, they’ve got that confidence and arrogance about them. If he keeps fit, I think he’s a good foil for Morelos.”
Lafferty played for Rangers for four years after joining the club from Burnley in 2008, clocking up 134 appearances in all competitions and scoring 36 goals. Now, he will be looking to add to that tally after 19 for Hearts last season.
Rangers are next in action on Sunday afternoon as they go up against Motherwell at Fir Park, with Lafferty pushing for a start alongside Alfredo Morelos, in place of the Colombian, or indeed out wide.
They then face a trip to Russia to face a second leg against Ufa, before travelling across Glasgow to play Celtic in a match that will see Brendan Rodgers and Gerrard do battle.
