Frank McAvennie has suggested on Open Goal that Neil Lennon will not allow his Celtic players to get carried away with the win against Rangers at Ibrox in the Old Firm derby last weekend.

The former Celtic star has also suggested that Rangers losing the Scottish Premiership game 2-0 is not going affect Steven Gerrard’s side in their challenge for the title this season.

McAvennie said on Open Goal when asked if Celtic are now going to build a gap over Rangers: “It’s not the defining part of the season, but this helps. It gives the bragging rights for all the boys all week working, so it’s great for that.

“Neil Lennon will just keep at them, the next game is the most important. It’s just one of them. We will see what happens.

“The next one’s at Celtic Park, which is a big massive statement if Celtic can win that. I think it is going to be defined by the Old Firm games.”

Too early to be defining

Both Celtic and Rangers have made strong starts to the season, and the Gers headed into last weekend’s Old Firm derby as favourites.

While Rangers will be disappointed that they could not defeat the Hoops, the fact of the matter is that it is too early in the season to draw any definitive conclusion.

However, it is clear that Rangers need to step up their game against Celtic, and that there is still room for improvement.

The performance of Steven Gerrard’s team, especially in the first half, left much to be desired, and Rangers fans deserve better than that.
