Tottenham Hotspur maintained their unbeaten start to their Champions League group-stage campaign as they drew away at Real Madrid.

Frank Lampard told BT Sport’s live coverage of Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid (broadcast on 17th October 2017 from 7:00 pm) that he thought that Spurs were unlucky not to receive a first-half penalty in the Bernabeu.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into the game looking to extend their unbeaten start to their group-stage, but they would have known how difficult a task it would prove to be.

Tottenham did take the lead through an own goal shortly before the half-hour mark, but perhaps they should have been given the chance to establish a lead even earlier as Fernando Llorente – playing alongside Harry Kane as a front two – was brought down inside the box after a challenge from Casimero.

The referee did not give a penalty however, and Lampard suggested that Spurs – who would give away a penalty that would lead to the equaliser shortly before half-time – were unlucky not to be given a spot-kick.

‘[Casemiro’s] gone over the top there and dragged the back leg,’ he told BT Sport’s live coverage of Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid. ‘Both of them together for me makes it a penalty. He stops him being able to get to his feet’.

Of course, a penalty at that stage would have meant that the game from that point on could have played out completely differently, but on an extremely positive night for the Premier League side, Pochettino would be forgiven for just wondering what could have perhaps been had the referee made the call that Lampard felt he should have made.
