Ex-West Ham United midfielder Frank Lampard has told Sky Sports that he thinks the club should splash the cash in the transfer market this summer.

The Hammers went into Saturday’s game with Swansea City having lost each of their previous five games, and had picked up just two points from a possible 21.

With results elsewhere also dragging West Ham closer to the relegation zone, they had to beat Swansea at the London Stadium – and they did just that as Cheikhou Kouyate’s long-range strike claimed all three points in a 1-0 win.

West Ham have now dragged themselves eight points clear of the relegation zone, and manager Slaven Bilic has some breathing space after intense speculation surrounding his future in the London Stadium hot seat.

The Croatian may have guided West Ham to a seventh place finish in the Premier League last season, but poor results this term have thrown his future into doubt on more than one occasion.

Bilic isn’t out of the woods just yet, and West Ham may still consider a managerial change, but he got the win he needed this weekend – and ex-Hammers ace Frank Lampard has told Sky Sports that he wants West Ham to stick with their manager.

Lampard suggested that Bilic is a gentleman as well as a good manager, and having faced some difficult circumstances this season, he deserves the chance to splash the cash this summer and bring in new faces.

The former Chelsea ace noted that West Ham’s recruitment last summer wasn’t ideal, with the likes of Havard Nordtveit, Sofiane Feghouli, Jonathan Calleri, Gokhan Tore and the already-departed Simone Zaza offering very little, and Lampard wants West Ham to invest properly this time around.

“I really like Slaven Bilic, he’s an absolute gentleman and a talented manager as well,” said Lampard. “I think he’s had a tough year. I think West Ham’s recruitment wasn’t great last year, and the whole move to the stadium has been very difficult for all at the club. I’d like to see them stick with him and recruit better in the summer.”

“West Ham moved to the stadium in order to challenge for the European places, and I think they have to be real now, to go out and spend that money,” he added.
