England are amongst the favourites for this World Cup, but, you could argue, on paper, this is nowhere near the best England team we have seen.
Of course, the team from 1966 actually became World Cup winners, while the team from the mid-2000s, rightly or wrongly, were labelled the Golden Generation.
Speaking on The Rest is Football on Netflix, Frank Lampard was asked which Golden Generation player he’d most like to put into this current side.
Of course, the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole were all world-class talents, but Lampard picked another of his former teammates to drop into this current England side.

Frank Lampard would want John Terry in this England team
Lampard was asked which former England teammate he’d want to put in this current team.
The Coventry City boss noted that Wayne Rooney may be the most talented, but in terms of what the team needs, he’d pick John Terry.
“JT for me, all day long. Wayne (Rooney), obviously, you know, but when you think of the options we have in those positions, Harry Kane is Harry Kane, forget about it, Wayne can play around him, but JT would offer loads to this team,” Lampard said.
Lampard is right, Terry would be a smarter pick than Rooney at this point.
Harry Kane is already arguably the best striker in the world, but England currently don’t have one of those truly top-class defenders.
Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi are both very good players, but they’re not at that elite level in the same way Terry was in terms of competing for Premier League Player of the Year honours.
Whether or not England’s defence is good enough to go and win this tournament remains to be seen, but they’d have a much stronger chance if they were able to field a defender like Terry in their backline.
