Frank Lampard has revealed he kept secret from Derby County player Mason Mount the fact that senior England manager Gareth Southgate was watching the game against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions boss was present to watch the Rams record a goalless draw in the Championship, despite the fact there were English teams competing in the Champions League on the same evening.

Derby peppered the Blackburn goal without any reward, but attacking midfielder Mount impressed again and was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after hitting the woodwork.

The England Under-21 internatonal may have been someone Southgate was casting his eye over at the game, as he has previously trained with the nation team’s senior squad.

Manager Lampard explained that he kept Southgate’s presence hidden from Mount before the match, as he didn’t want to put too much pressure on him.

The 19-year-old is being tipped to become a future star by his current boss and feels he turned in a good performance against Blackburn.

“I was [aware Southgate was watching] and I didn’t tell him, I didn’t want to put that pressure on him because I think he puts enough pressure on himself in a good way,” Lampard told RamsTV.

“I think his constant movement, his constant quality throughout the game so it was good for him. I’m sure Gareth would be impressed.

“I think there is more to come from him, I think there is massive uplift in him and that is saying something when you consider the level he is at his age already, I think he is going to be an absolute top player.”

Mount is currently on loan at Derby from Premier League giants Chelsea and has taken the Championship by storm since joining in the summer.

The creative playmaker has already scored four goals in all competitions and has been compared to Lampard due to his surging runs from midfield.

He is viewed as part of the next generation of England youngsters that will develop into stars and he currently has a brilliant mentor under Lampard to help improve.
