Cristiano Ronaldo became a major talking point after Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo.
Many fans argued his teammates did not play for him – as Argentina seem to do for Lionel Messi – or create enough chances for the striker to score.
Joao Neves’ post-match comments then fuelled the debate, and Francisco Conceicao may have just brought it back.
Francisco Conceição says Portugal are not obligated to pass to Cristiano Ronaldo

Conceicao did not dismiss Ronaldo’s importance, but his message was clear about how Portugal must attack.
The winger said Ronaldo’s scoring record is unique, yet insisted the team cannot make every decision around finding him.
In Sunday’s press conference, he stated: “Cristiano and his goal-scoring ability, there’s no one like him. But we’re not obligated to pass the ball to him; I pass it to whoever is best positioned. Cristiano is here to help, just like any other player on the national team.”
That comment may only intensify a debate that was already heated after the DR Congo draw.
Neves made a similar point after the opener, saying Ronaldo knows he is no different from the rest of the squad and is another player helping the group.
The PSG midfielder was heavily criticised online, especially by supporters who felt Portugal failed to serve their captain properly.
Conceicao’s words appear to defend the same principle. Portugal respect Ronaldo, but they cannot play as though the entire system exists only for him.
Portugal face Uzbekistan under huge scrutiny
Portugal now face Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23rd, with pressure already building around Roberto Martinez’s side.
The DR Congo draw was not only disappointing because of the result. It raised questions about balance, service and whether Portugal can manage Ronaldo’s role without losing their attacking variety.
That makes the Uzbekistan match important beyond the points. Portugal need control, sharper decision-making and a more convincing performance.
