Fans have been left surprised after FIFA appointed an entirely Argentinian referee team for France’s game against Morocco.
Clearly, every official appointed by FIFA has to be treated with respect. They have worked their way to the top of the game and there should be no doubts about their quality.
Yet, the fact that every single member of the team is from Argentina is worth noting.
What a comeback! What is your INSTANT reaction to Argentina's win? 🤯
What did you think of the decision to disallow Egypt’s goal in the second half? 👀
The South American giants, of course, beat France in the 2022 World Cup final – perhaps the most dramatic edition of the iconic game in Qatar.
They are huge rivals on the international stage and both countries are among the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup.
Indeed, fans on social media were shocked.
Fans surprised as FIFA name Argentinian referees for France vs Morocco
FIFA have confirmed that Facundo Tello will oversee the game. He will be assisted by Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade. Dario Herrera will serve as the fourth official and Cristian Navarro will act as the reserve assistant referee.
Given the size of the game for France, fans expressed their surprise on social media platform X.
One fan wrote: “Is it normal for all the officials to be of the same nation?”
Another added: “What led to FIFA thinking this would be a good idea?”
This fan said: “You’re kidding.”
“This can’t be serious,” commented another observer.
“I am in tears,” read another response.
It is worth mentioning, of course, that the referee who oversaw Argentina’s controversial win over Egypt is French and many believe Argentina got lucky with key decisions during their World Cup last 16 win.

The only way that France and Argentina can renew their World Cup rivalry is if both teams reach the final. The French face the sizeable challenge of Morocco next, while they could meet Spain in the semi-finals should both teams get there.
Argentina, meanwhile, will have to overcome either Switzerland or Colombia next to tee up a meeting with either Norway or England in the semi-finals.
