Foyth could be a good signing for Spurs but do they need to take the gamble?

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to Argentine whizkid Juan Foyth. Do they need to be shopping for bargains?

Tottenham Hotspur are strongly linked with making Juan Foyth their first signing of the summer, with the London Evening Standard reporting they will hold talks this week.

Foyth is an Argentina under-20 international who plays for Estudiantes in his homeland.

At £10 million he would be a very smartly priced addition compared to some of the crazy prices being touted for Premier League players.

But trying to be smart in the transfer market might not pay off.

Foyth is untested in the Premier League, and ultimately a gamble. And one Tottenham don’t need to take.

The youngster stands a tough task to break into Tottenham’s starting line-up, but questions should be asked whether he would get into the starting XI of a mid-tier Premier League side, let alone a title contender.

While Tottenham do not have a spare £70 million to blow on Virgil Van Dijk, there should be a happy medium too, between an untested youngster and an over priced international.

Leicester bought Harry Maguire for £17 million this summer, and Alfie Mawson is available for not much more. If they want to set their sights higher, for the likes of Kostas Manolas, they should be pushing to do so.

Foyth could be good, but there is no guarantee he would be above Cameron Carter-Vickers in Tottenham’s pecking order.

It is a risk they do not need to take, when they should be reaching for the stars.
