Southampton will regret not pursuing interest.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will look to add to his increasing goal tally this weekend as he chases Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goals record.

Just with Shearer, Southampton have reason to regret that the prolific forward has not been shining for them.

Southampton sold Shearer after five seasons and 43 goals, a fraction of his 379 career club strikes.

This weekend marks four years since the Saints were linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane, another near miss.

The Sun reported on October 28 2014 that Southampton wanted to sign the Tottenham forward.

Charlie Wyatt’s report read: “Southampton are plotting a £10million bid for Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

“In-form Saints want to beef up their attacking options and could swoop for the England Under-21 ace in January.

“Kane, 21, is struggling to nail down a regular starting place in Maurico Pochettino’s wobbling team.”

This was in the first few months of Pochettino’s spell at Spurs, and everything would quickly change.

Pochettino begun to show faith in Kane, and by time the January transfer window came around, Tottenham considered him not for sale.

Southampton’s intentions were correct, but they did not give Tottenham real reason to change their stance. Who knows whether a £20 million offer, rather than a mooted £10m move, would have swayed Spurs?

Kane has since gone from strength to strength, winning two Premier League golden boots and one World Cup golden boot.

He has a long way to go still to reach Shearer’s all time record of 260 in the Premier League, with 113 currently to his name.

Fortunately for Tottenham, he is doing it for them, rather than trying to accomplish such a feat for Southampton.
