The Scot left Cardiff in circumstances that became increasingly controversial.

It is now four years since Cardiff City sacked Malky Mackay. The Scot, who had led them to promotion to the Premier League, was struggling to replicate that form in the Premier League.

But his dismissal was not met with universal acclaim from Cardiff fans, who had become disillusioned with the ownership of Vincent Tan.

The eccentric owner was highly critical of Mackay and director of football Iain Moody’s signings that summer, in what soon escalated to the text scandal of August 2014.

Now, with Cardiff looking to challenge for a Premier League return, it is a good time to see where the infamous summer signings of Mackay and Moody are now.

Andreas Cornelius

The most infamous of Cardiff’s flops was the young Danish striker. He cost the Welsh side a club record amount when signed from Copenhagen, However, he struggled at the club and was sold back to the Danish superpower just six months later at a heavy financial loss.

He went on to find form again in his homeland before joining Italian side Atalanta in the summer. He recently scored twice for the club, as they thrashed Everton 5-1 in the Europa League in November.

John Brayford

After a successful spell at Derby County this was a chance for the right-back to take the step up to the top-flight. However, he was barely used by Mackay and eventually joined former club Sheffield United on loan.

He became a more regular feature under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but rejoined the Blades permanently in January 2015.

Now back at his first club Burton Albion.

Simon Moore

Signed from Brentford the goalkeeper failed to make an appearance under Mackay at Cardiff.

After only a handful of appearances for the Bluebirds he joined Sheffield United in August 2016.

He was named League One Team of the Year’s goalkeeper last season, as the Blades earned promotion, and is now fighting Jamal Blackman for the starting spot at Bramall Lane.

Steven Caulker

The talented defender, with one England cap and goal to his name, looked a great signing at the time but never found his best form in Wales.

After relegation he joined QPR and has struggled to find form, fitness and peace at Loftus Road. He went on to have loan spells with Southampton and Liverpool, making just a handful of appearances and in June spoke candidly about his battles with mental health problems.

A move to Russia collapsed in the summer and just this week he was released six months early from his QPR contract. Hopefully his next move can see his career get back on track.

Gary Medel

The Chilean was considered a massive coup when plucked from Sevilla. But his influence could not keep Cardiff up and he was sold in the following summer to Inter Milan.

There he thrived and also gained notoriety for his excellent performances at centre-back for the Chile national team.

He joined Turkish side Besiktas in the summer, helping them to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time earlier this year.

Maximiliano Amondarain

After success at the FIFA under-20 World Cup and impressing on trial the Uruguayan defender was snapped up by Cardiff in the summer.

However, he did not feature in a single game for the club and left a year later. After spells in Spanish football’s lower leagues with Elche B and Barakaldo he returned to his homeland in the summer, joining Racing Club Montevideo.

Kevin Theophile-Catherine

A regular during Mackay’s reign, the French full-back was always unlikely to hang round after relegation.

He joined Saint-Etienne on loan after one season in the Welsh capital, where he remains on a permanent deal today.

Peter Odemwingie

The Nigerian journeyman was signed to bring Premier League experience to the Cardiff squad, but he stayed just six months before being swapped with Kenwyne Jones of Stoke City.

After stints at Bristol City and Rotherham United he is now banging in the goals for Indonesian side Madura United.
