Kalvin Phillips has revealed that four words from Victor Orta left him feeling relieved after Aston Villa tried to sign him from Leeds in 2019.
After the midfielder gave an interview to The Times, Henry Winter wrote: ‘Orta, a warm man, occasionally fiery, said to him, “If you want to leave now then tell me and we can sell you. But if you don’t or you don’t know then I’m not going to sell you.” Phillips replied again, “I don’t know.” Orta’s mind was made up. “I’m not selling you.” Phillips was relieved.’
Phillips was clearly reluctant to leave, but referenced the club’s difficult financial situation as a factor which played a part in his thinking.
It feels like, if Leeds weren’t in that situation, he would’ve given an answer a bit more clear-cut than saying he doesn’t know.
As we sit here now, we presume Phillips is so, so glad he didn’t make the move to Villa Park.

That isn’t a dig at Dean Smith’s side, not at all. They are doing fantastically well. It is more a case of a boyhood Leeds fan living a Premier League dream with the club he has been at since 14, and whose family are all supporters.
Of course, he could’ve played top-flight football with the Villans, but it must feel so much sweeter to do it at Elland Road with a club close to his heart.

Phillips has enjoyed such excellent form that Gareth Southgate has handed him international recognition with England.
Additionally, Tottenham and Liverpool were interested in making a £50 million move for him, according to the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old must be extremely happy that Orta somewhat took the decision out of his hands.
