Barry Douglas might not get his place back
Leeds’ summer signing Barry Douglas missed the game with injury, after briefly making a return at the start of the month against Norwich.
Ezgjan Alioski filled in again for him at left-back and the Macedonian was impressive.
Alioski provided assists for both of Leeds’ goals and worked tirelessly defensively.
He shut down transfer target Dan James with ease.
His performances on the wing picked up flak earlier in the season, but at left-back he is playing a crucial role and Douglas may not get his place back so easily.
Leeds are still working out how to replace Samu Saiz
This game saw another experiment from Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds seek to settle on a way to replace Samu Saiz.
Leeds started summer signing Patrick Bamford up front, with Kemar Roofe in Saiz’s old role behind him.
It didn’t really work, but it’s too early to write it off. Roofe has been out of form in general in recent weeks, and Bamford is still finding his way back to form after injury.
The Whites should persist with this to see if the pair can click.
Ayling error should not ruin promising performance
Luke Ayling was heavily criticised after a poor display away to Middlesbrough at the weekend.
He have away a penalty last night which early cost Leeds the game.
Fans vented their anger on social media, but before that, Ayling showed promise.
His ball into Alioski sparked Leeds’ second goal, and until the penalty, he wasn’t troubled.
There was enough to build on here for the right-back to feel positive.
Promotion is going to the wire
Leeds are back on top of the table, only just.
The Whites are top by a point, and behind that, the chasing pack are closing in.
Sheffield United in third are just three points back, and if West Brom win their game in hand, they will be just a point behind the Blades. Likewise Bristol City who could be just a point further back.
Last night was an illustration for Leeds and Norwich of just how quickly the table can swing.
If they aren’t careful, both teams could end up missing out. The promotion race could go right down to the last day of the season.
