The lack of opportunities afforded to Oscar Schwartau at Brondby could scupper his chances of a move to the Premier League with Newcastle United.
At least, that is the view of Jesper Thygesen; the former Denmark U20 international who represented one of the biggest clubs in Scandinavia two decades ago.
Thygesen, speaking to Tipsbladet, admits he is growing increasingly concerned that Brondby’s most talented youngsters are not being handed the opportunities their potential merits. Oscar Schwartau, arguably the jewel in the crown of the club’s academy, has played only 35 of a potential 450 minutes in the current Danish Superligaen campaign, after all.

“The fact that there won’t be more playing time for (the youngsters), I think, is a huge problem for Brondby and right now for Schwartau,” Thygesen argues. “It looks as if he is in a bit of trouble.”
Newcastle United move may be scuppered for Oscar Schwartau
Of course, the issue could be one of ability. Brondby coach Jesper Sorensen, Thygesen adds, is not exactly renowned for his reluctance to give youth a chance after all.
But whatever the reason, Thygesen cannot see any world in which Schwartau ends up at a Newcastle United, a Bayern Munich or a Barcelona unless things change for the teenage forward.
“It may well be that he is not good enough. That must be the most likely,” the pundit adds. “Because Jesper Sorensen is known for wanting young players. (Maybe) Schwartau is not skilled enough, and that he must hurry up and improve.
“There will, of course, be some ups and downs in relation to such young players. But it is a sad path they are on.

“And when you read that Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Newcastle and Dortmund were interested (in Schwartau, he lack of game time) does not increase the possibility of ending up in such a club.”
Newcastle have made budding youngsters a key cornerstone of their plans under Saudi Arabian ownership. The Magpies could end up spending in excess of £60 million for fresh-faced full-back duo Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
