Northern Ireland’s man of the moment Will Grigg was rumoured to be swapping Wigan Athletic for Celtic last summer.

Wigan's Will Grigg

It’s fair to say Will Grigg’s fire has been extinguished. The star of Euro 2016 despite not even managing one minute on the pitch for Northern Ireland, the 25-year-old has terrified few defences this season.

Consequently, Celtic fans can be forgiven for mopping their brow after speculation linking the Scottish champions with a move for Grigg last summer came to nothing, as reported by The Daily Mirror.

At the time, however, Celtic’s reported interest appeared more than justified. Grigg was in red hot form for Wigan Athletic, spawning one of the most infectious football ditties of the modern era.

After netting 28 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions and spearheading The Latics’ return to the Championship the former Brentford hitman more than earned his 15 minutes of fame at the centre of the footballing subconscious.

Meanwhile, Celtic were preparing to begin the next season with Leigh Griffiths, ill-suited to new manager Brendan Rodgers’ lone-striker system, and a teenage Frenchman by the name of Moussa Dembele leading their line.

Thankfully, however, the former Fulham youngster has proven to be nothing short of a phenomenon at Parkhead. And, with Celtic cruising to their sixth straight title without breaking sweat, few will be losing sleep over their inability to bring Grigg to Glasgow.

Furthermore, with just five goals in 33 games this season, the striker’s stock has plummeted. Wigan will finish second bottom in the Championship table with Grigg unable to fire them to safety.

The fact he failed to adapt to life in England’s second tier suggests he may have had his work cut out displacing Dembele, not to mention Griffiths, at Celtic.

As a result, it appears unlikely that Grigg will be setting the Scottish Premiership alight any time soon.
