Yevgeny Kafelnikov questions continued opportunities amid losing streak
Venus Williams’ recent run of results has sparked debate, with former world No.1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov suggesting it may be time to stop awarding her wildcards on the WTA Tour.
The American legend, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, has struggled for form since returning to competition — losing eight consecutive matches since her win at the 2025 Washington Open.
Kafelnikov: Wildcards could be better used elsewhere

Speaking on the Hard Court podcast, Kafelnikov backed comments made by coach Dmitry Tursunov, who had also questioned the decision to continue granting Williams entry into main draws.
“I have huge respect for Venus and everything she’s achieved,” Kafelnikov said. “But it’s time.”
He argued that wildcard spots should be allocated more strategically. “These opportunities could benefit many other players. They could be used more productively, and I agree with that view.”
The criticism comes after Williams’ latest first-round defeat at Indian Wells, extending a winless stretch that now spans over seven months.
Miami Open offers chance to end long drought
Despite the criticism, Williams has received another wildcard — this time into the Miami Open, a tournament where she has a rich history.
She famously won the title in 1998 and successfully defended it in 1999, marking two of the most significant early achievements of her career.
Now 45, Williams faces Francesca Jones in the first round — a matchup that could offer her a realistic chance to end her losing streak, given that Jones is also struggling for form.
While expectations remain modest, even a single victory would represent a meaningful milestone after a challenging period on tour.
Whether Williams can turn things around remains to be seen, but the debate around her continued participation — and the use of wildcards — is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
