Former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Steve Bull has told the Shropshire Star he is looking forward to the reunion between Richard Stearman and Danny Batth at the heart of the club’s defence.

Stearman returned to Molineux on a season-long loan from Fulham on transfer deadline day – a year after moving in the opposite direction for £2 million.

And Bull, who played almost 600 games for Wolves in a 13-year spell, believes the deal will benefit captain Batth in particular.

“He (Stearman) was popular with the players and the fans,” Bull said, as quoted by the Shropshire Star. “Why they got rid of him in the first place I don’t know.

“It’s weird how things work out and I was shocked when I heard the news.

“But it’s what they need. We’ve been saying for ages they’ve lacked experience at the back. Danny Batth’s been taking the world on his shoulders but he and Stearman will hopefully form a solid partnership, as they have done before.”

Wolves turned to Stearman after a proposed deal for Benfica defender and Brazilian international Luisao failed to materialise, while Portuguese reports claimed that Braga’s Wily Boly – who later signed for FC Porto – had turned down a move to Molineux.

Only nine clubs conceded more goals than Wolves in last season’s Championship, with centre-backs Kortney Hause and Mike Williamson both sidelined for long periods.

However, the captures of experienced duo Stearman, 29, and Silvio, 28 – formerly of Benfica and Atletico Madrid – should help to prevent last season’s problems from reoccurring.
