Former Virginia Tech assistant and Emory & Henry head coach Curt Newsome has died at 67, leaving behind a coaching legacy that stretched across college and Virginia high school football.
Newsome’s career was not built in one stop. It was built through classrooms, weight rooms, small towns and offensive line meetings where players learned more than blocking rules.

CFB Alerts shared the news of Newsome’s passing as tributes began spreading across the college football community.
WCYB reported that Newsome died at age 67. The station noted that he led Emory & Henry from 2014 through 2023 before stepping down in July 2024 because of health concerns.
That final decision came with a message from Newsome that now reads with extra emotion. He said coaching at his alma mater had been the dream of a lifetime, but he needed to focus on his health and family.
No new public family statement was immediately found during verification. Emory & Henry’s 2024 release said Newsome and his wife, Melinda, appreciated support and well wishes during his treatments.
Curt Newsome coaching legacy reached far beyond one job
Newsome went 53-42 in 10 seasons as Emory & Henry’s head coach. His first team finished 8-2 in 2014, earned a share of the ODAC title and helped him win ODAC Coach of the Year.
He also guided the Wasps through their move from Division III to Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. That kind of transition can expose a program, but Newsome kept Emory & Henry competitive.
His influence also ran through Virginia Tech. Newsome coached the Hokies’ offensive line under Frank Beamer, helping the program win ACC titles in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
Virginia Tech remembered him as a respected leader at multiple stops, including James Madison, Emory & Henry and Virginia high school football.
