Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Pascal Chimbonda has criticised the current player’s mental resilience after their Champions League elimination.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 at home to Juventus after clinching a 2-2 draw in Italy a fortnight earlier.

They were one of three English teams to crash out in the last 16, along with Manchester United and Chelsea.

Chimbonda believes Tottenham let themselves down and called into question star man Harry Kane, who did not score in the crucial second leg decider.

Speaking to Bet Stars, Chimbonda said: “Yes, Tottenham were on top in the first half and could have scored more goals. In the second half they didn’t play well and Juventus were on top.

“The big teams only need a few chances and Juventus scored two, so this is why they are considered to be the bigger team. Teams like Juventus have always been in this competition and they know how to win games.

“Your big players have to show up and I don’t think Harry Kane played his best game. Next season they will be in the Champions League again so the more experience they get, the further they will go.”

The criticism of Harry Kane is an example of the fine margins in football.

Kane hit the post in injury time and it rebounded out fortuitously for Juventus.

Had that gone in, Kane would have been hailed as a big game player and Tottenham’s resilience would have taken the tie to extra-time with momentum on their side.

Tottenham will be determined to bounce back stronger next season.
