Rob Mackenzie has explained just why the Belgian was brought in to White Hart Lane.
Former Tottenham Hotspur head of player identification Rob Mackenzie has explained why Tottenham Hotspur decided to sign Toby Alderweireld in the summer of 2015.
Spurs snapped up the Belgian from Atletico Madrid after he had impressed on loan at Premier League rivals Southampton on loan during the 2014-15 season.
He has since gone on to become a star for Spurs and is considered by many to be the best defender in the Premier League at present.

Speaking to Sky Sports this week Mackenzie tried to explain just why Spurs decided to sign the Belgian, stating:
“When I was at Tottenham Hotspur we assessed a number of prospective central defensive partners for Jan Vertonghen, but it soon became apparent that the stand-out candidate was Toby Alderweireld.
“He is an interesting case study because his statistical performance profile wasn’t necessarily that significant but there were key themes associated with him that meant he was a really good fit.”

He went on to highlight six key reasons why he arrived; elite experience, flexibility factor, mind and body, defensive record, perfect partner and winning mentality – all of which Spurs fans will agree he brings to the table.
Whatever the reasons behind Spurs’ decision to sign the player there is no doubt that fans at White Hart Lane are pleased that they did.
Alderweireld has gone on to become a star in the first-team with Tottenham Hotspur and he is undoubtedly a key asset that the club will hope sticks around for some time.
