Danny Mills, a former team-mate of Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, has given an insight into the Gers star – who is currently suspended by the club and not expected to play for them again.

Mills was speaking on Sky Sports News HQ today (20/10/2016) about Barton, with whom he played for at Manchester City.

He spoke glowingly of his footballing ability, but admitted that Barton struggled when he felt those around him were not playing up to his own perceived standard:

“He’s complex, a very complex player and personality as well.

“He’s a very, very good player. His problems sometimes come (when) he thinks he’s a little bit better than he is. He expects everyone to be a good as he thinks he is. That’s a huge problem. He gets frustrated with other people.

“When that goes, the red mist comes down, and he is not quite responsible for his own actions. He can’t quite comprehend what’s happening (and) he doesn’t quite have enough sorrow or empathy for what’s happens.

“He has reinvented himself, but you can’t keep making the same mistakes.”

This is an accusation that has been levelled at Barton by many Rangers fans since he first made the move to Glasgow to work under Mark Warburton.

His comments in the press about rivals Celtic alluded to the fact he was not taking Scottish football seriously enough and when he finally had a bust up with Andy Halliday in training many Rangers fans suspected that Barton felt he was above the level of Warburton’s current side.

The midfielder, who joined the club from Burnley in the summer, places serious demands on his team-mates.

He will feel that is what was needed at Ibrox and that he was only trying to elevate Rangers to his perceived level.

But it appears he has only been a divisive figure in Glasgow and is unlikely to feature under Mark Warburton again.
