Former Spurs target set for Swansea – is he Bony’s replacement?

Swansea City are set to tie up the signing of Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis – raising question marks over the future of Wilfried Bony.

The Swans took the decision to appoint Garry Monk as their permanent manager after he took temporary charge following the sacking of Michael Laudrup in February. Monk led Swansea to safety with a strong run towards the end of the season, which was heavily influenced by the goals of Ivorian striker Bony.

Bony, who arrived from Vitesse last summer in a club record £12m deal, scored 16 goals in just 34 Premier League appearances, and his late season flurry of goals led to the Swans’ survival – and a place in Ivory Coast’s starting line-up at the World Cup, ahead of the iconic Didier Drogba.

Unsurprisingly though, his impressive displays in South Wales have attracted interest from a number of teams – including Arsenal and Liverpool. The Swans have moved to deny that Bony will be sold this summer, but their latest transfer move could suggest otherwise.

French hitman Bafetimbi Gomis – nicknamed by some as ‘Baby Drogba’ – is an immensely powerful striker who hit 17 goals in 42 games in all competitions this season, but with his contract set to expire at the Stade Gerland this summer, it always seemed that the 28-year-old was set to leave for a big pay day elsewhere.

Newcastle, Sunderland and Tottenham have all been linked with Gomis in recent times, it’s quite the coup for Swansea to land the striker, who had reportedly been seeking wages in the region of £100,000 per week. With a fairly big reputation in Ligue 1, Gomis will no doubt be expected to be the main man at the Liberty Stadium next season.

Which ultimately brings us back to Bony. The two strikers can certainly be compared in terms of their playing style and their strength, and with both players entering the prime of their careers, neither will want to play second fiddle. Given that Gomis could certainly fill a similar role to Bony at Swansea, it could well be that the Ivorian will leave the club and Gomis is ultimately his replacement.
