The striker helped the club win promotion from the Championship.

Last night saw Southampton pick up an impressive win in the UEFA Europa League. The Saints ran out 2-1 winners against Italian giants Inter Milan in the competition – a result that puts them in a good position regarding qualification for the next stage of the competition.

The result is even more impressive when you consider that a little over five years ago the club were playing in League One.

Southampton’s rise back to their current lofty position has taken in several different players, including one Billy Sharp.

The Yorkshireman joined Southampton from Doncaster Rovers in 2012 and helped the club to promotion back to the Premier League that same year.

Unfortunately, promotion saw Sharp’s chances of first-team football dwindle and he ended up spending time out on loan at clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Reading and former side Doncaster before joining Leeds in 2014.

But he is still a big fan of the Saints – as he highlighted on his Twitter account last night – with Southampton even responding:

There is no doubt that Southampton’s rise has been monumental and the likes of the Sharp’s. Guly Do Prado’s and Michail Antonio’s deserve their mentions just as much as Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Jose Fonte and co.

Hopefully the Saints can continue their good form in the Premier League and Europe for the rest of the season.
