The retired centre-back clearly believes in his former club.
Southampton take on Tottenham this weekend, with plenty of reason to be intrigued about the fixture. Not only are the two teams battling it out in the league for a European place – but the manager of Spurs just so happens to be the former boss of Southampton.
When Mauricio Pochettino left, along with a hoard of top players, many doubted that Southampton could have a successful season.
But they have done just that, even looking like Champions League contenders at one stage.
One man who has certainly been impressed by their performances is another who crosses the Southampton-Tottenham divide.
Chris Perry played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003 and also spent two years with Southampton at the end of his career. He has been speaking to Southampton’s official website about their season this week.
“It’s an amazing story this season, and playing in the Europa League next season would be fitting. I think it’s pretty much guaranteed now for both Saints and Spurs next season, but it’s deserving of the club’s achievements and everyone who was at the club from the time when it went into administration and came out of it.
“Markus Liebherr put his money in and the club has surged forward, so European football will be the culmination of that, and the next target will be to try and push on into the Champions League on a regular basis.”
There is no doubt that The Saints have thrived this season in the face of adversity. Ronald Koeman has galvanized the squad and made some shrewd signings that has them at this stage now, fighting for a place in Europe next season.
If they can get the better of Tottenham this weekend, they will be one step closer.
