Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is heading back to the Steel City on Thursday – but not to sign for Sheffield United.
The 35-year-old left Bury FC shortly after his arrival at Gigg Lane in August, citing family reasons, and he is now carving out a career in the media.

As part of his new role, Kirkland tweeted saying he due to meet with Andy Rhodes – his former goalkeeping coach at Hillsborough – and Keiren Westwood – the man who ousted him as the Owls’ number one.
And though one Sheffield United fan thought there might be more to Kirkland’s visit, the once-capped England international was quick to shoot him down.
Sheffield United lost teenage goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Bournemouth on deadline day, and could move to replace him outside of the transfer window, as long as the player in question was a free agent ahead of the 11pm cut-off.

But Kirkland, who spent three seasons with Wednesday, for whom he made 90 appearances, will not be moving to Bramall Lane, it seems.
