Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson has told BBC Sport Scotland’s Facebook Live Channel that he believes Celtic will earn a 3-1 win over Motherwell in Sunday’s Betfred Cup final at Hampden Park.

Stephen Robinson’s Motherwell face the daunting task of trying to end the 64-match unbeaten run that has seen Celtic dominate Scottish football in recent times, after beating Old Firm rivals Rangers to qualify for the final.

Celtic come into the match after being hammered 7-1 by French giants Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in Group B of the Champions League, which saw the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani all find the back of the net.

Thompson claimed Celtic will earn a comfortable 3-1 win to lift their fourth trophy under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, despite the recent impressive form of The Well and PSG’s convincing win over Celtic.

“The hammering by PSG, a true hammering, will not affect Celtic because the players they had on the bench I imagine will come into start on Sunday,” Thompson said.

“Every single time they’ve been tested domestically, over the last 64 games, they’ve come up trumps. I think that will be the case again on Sunday. Motherwell have been playing very well and Robinson deserves praise. But they won’t win.”

The likes of Louis Moult, Chris Cadden and Ryan Bowman have all been in excellent form leading up to Sunda’s cup final, and they will be hoping to prove Thompson and may others wrong by lifting just a second Scottish League Cup in their history.

The cup final at Hampden Park is the first of three matches between Celtic and Motherwell that will take place over the next week, as a rearranged league match has been pencilled in for Wednesday before the two sides meet again on Saturday.
