Rangers look set to replace interim manager Graeme Murty after six months in charge at Ibrox.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has dismissed Jim White’s suggestion that Jack Ross is in the running to become the next manager at Ibrox.

Ross secured the Championship title with St Mirren earlier this month and according to White – the Rangers-supporting Talksport presenter – his is a name that has been mentioned to him “constantly” in relation to the Gers vacancy, which is tipped to go to Liverpool Under-18s coach Steven Gerrard.

Asked if he had heard the same about Ross, Boyd – now on the books of Rangers’ Premiership rivals Kilmarnock – told White’s Friday show: “I’m not too sure about Jack Ross.

Jack Ross manager of Alloa Athletic waves during the Betfred League Cup Group match between Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic at Stark's Park on July 30, 2016 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.

“I think he’s someone who has done really, really well at St. Mirren. It might be that his next challenge is with a bigger club in the Scottish Premiership, to see where he goes. He’s been linked with a lot of jobs down south and what I will say is he’s done a fantastic job at St Mirren over the last 18 months. They were rock bottom last season, he’s turned them around and on a budget, compared to the rest of the Championship, which is phenomenal the work he’s done.

“I’d be surprised at that one. Our gaffer Stevie Clarke is another one that’s been linked with the Rangers job. He’s distanced himself from it this morning, saying it wasn’t really a story. I kind of get the feeling that maybe because of Steven Gerrard’s inexperience as a manger, Rangers might be trying to cover it up by saying that they’ve went for experience and they’ve said no to them. I don’t know how much truth is in it, though.

“But what I do believe that Steven Gerrard is well down the line to become the next Rangers manager.”

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

It is claimed that Gerrard, who was spotted in the stands at this month’s Old Firm semi-final in the Scottish Cup, could be assisted by former Liverpool teammate – and ex-Scotland international – Gary McAllister at Ibrox.

And the once England captain is said to have already approved the signings of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor at Rangers.

Gerrard retired from playing at the end of 2016 following a spell at Los Angeles Galaxy and has coached Liverpool’s U18s since the summer.
